Bird Behavior and Mortality in Relation to Power Lines in Prairie Habitats, North Dakota, 1981 to 1982

A biologist and field crew from Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center observed bird flights at 7 study sites, twice weekly during two spring and two fall migration periods between April 3, 1981 and May 20, 1982. Study sites were located in south-central North Dakota in Barnes, Kidder, and Stutsman counties. The database includes flight observation's of bird species in the vicinity

Whooping crane migration habitat selection data and distance to wind-energy infrastructure, 2010–2016

These data were developed to support an effort to understand how whooping cranes select stopover habitat in the presence of wind-energy infrastructure. Location and associated data came from whooping cranes from the Aransas-Wood Buffalo Population, 2010–2016. We marked a sample of 57 whooping cranes with leg-mounted transmitters that acquired locations via the global positioning system

Plant community data for annual brome management experimental plots in grasslands of Badlands National Park, South Dakota, and Scotts Bluff National Monument, Nebraska, 2015-2018

Plant cover data were collected in experimental plots at two sites, one at Badlands National Park, South Dakota, and one at Scotts Bluff National Monument, Nebraska. At each site, 40 50 x 50 m plots were assigned randomly to one of the following treatments: control (no action), burn-only (prescribed fire in fall 2016), burn+herbicide (prescribed fire followed by imazap

Hetero- and conspecifics effects on nest and chick survival for two listed species; piping plover and least tern breeding on the Missouri River, USA 2007-2016

We present two tabular digital data files representing values related how the presence of hetero- and conspecifics influence nest and chick survival for two listed migratory species breeding on the Missouri River; piping plover (Charadrius melodus) and least tern (Sternula antillarum). We followed 2,507 piping plover nests, 3,251 uniquely banded piping plover chicks, 1,060 lea

Location data for whooping cranes of the Aransas-Wood Buffalo Population, 2009-2018

Location and associated data came from whooping cranes from the Aransas-Wood Buffalo Population, 2009–2018. We marked a sample of 68 whooping cranes with leg-mounted transmitters that acquired locations via the global positioning system (GPS) network and transmitted those data through the Argos satellite system. Cranes were captured either at their natal areas in and adjacent to Woo

Greenhouse gas fluxes, dissolved gas concentrations, and water properties of laboratory mesocosms

The data describe greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, dissolved GHG concentrations, and mesocosm conditions (vegetation, hydrologic phases, ambient conditions) of a controlled, laboratory study.

High forb diversity prairie reconstruction at Neal Smith NWR 2005-2015

This data set consists of data collected during 2005-2007, 2010, and 2015 at Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge in Iowa, USA that were used in the analysis in support of the article titled "Toward improving pollinator habitat: Reconstructing prairies with high forb diversity," which has been submitted to Natural Areas Journal. We compared pollinator habitat, in terms of planted f

Fecundity data for midcontinent sandhill cranes, 2003-2006

Midcontinent sandhill cranes (Antigone canadensis) are the most abundant management population of cranes in the world and have a broad breeding range. Four breeding segments of midcontinent sandhill cranes have been designated based on spatial and temporal distributions throughout the year, including Western Alaska–Siberia (WA–S), Northern Canada–Nunavut (NC%

Management of remnant tallgrass prairie by grazing or fire in western Minnesota, 2016-2017

We studied the impacts of using cattle grazing or prescribed fire to manage remnant prairies on plant communities and soil characteristics in the prairie parkland province of western Minnesota. These datasets consist of nested frequency plot plant survey data, study site and soil characteristics, and management information taken from 73 sites owned and managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Se...

Evaluation of Survey Methods for Colonial Waterbirds at Chase Lake National Wildlife Refuge, North Dakota, data release

We investigated methods to estimate the number of nests of waterbirds at a large, mixed-species colony at Chase Lake National Wildlife Refuge in south-central North Dakota in 2012 and 2013. The data were summarized and used in the analyses for a publication in a U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report. The data consist of two data sets that were used to assess visible-nest counts for...

Renesting propensity, intervals, and reproductive success data for the Northern Great Plains Piping Plover, a threatened shorebird species 2014-2016

This data set is part of a data release as a companion to a to be published manuscript titled "Low renesting propensity and reproductive success make renesting unproductive for the threatened Piping Plover, Charadrius melodus" Upon reproductive failure, many bird species may make a secondary attempt at nesting. This data set includes four tabular digital data files representing values rel
