The staff serve as Technical Advisors to committees and work groups such as the Laws and Regulations Committee (The NCWM Committee charged with reviewing proposed changes to NIST Handbook 130 and NIST Handbook 133):
- The National Conference on Weights and Measures (NCWM) - Laws and Regulations Committee and its Subcommittees
- Technical Committee 6 (TC6) "Prepackaged Products" of the Organization for International Legal Metrology (OIML)
The goal of this program is to promote, provide uniformity, and training for the following:
- NIST Handbook 130
- NIST Handbook 133
- Examination Procedure for Price Verification
- Regulations under the Fair Packaging and Labeling Act (FPLA, 15 U.S.C. Section 1451-1461)
- Unit Pricing Guide “A Best Practice Approach to Unit Pricing (NIST SP 1181)
- The SI (International Systems of Units), a.k.a. the metric system, as the preferred system of weights and measures for trade and commerce
