Computer Science Week Social Media Contest
Deadline: on or before 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time, Thursday, December 31, 2020.
December 7th-13th is Computer Science Education Week! This week is held annually in recognition of the birthday of computing pioneer Admiral Grace Murray Hopper (December 9, 1906). In the 1930’s the first programmable computer was created, but trying to teach this new skill must have been arduous and perplexing. Through the month of December, ORISE wants to hear your ideas on how to teach computer science without technology. Share an idea or activity that teaches computer science without the use of technology. To enter the contest, comment your answer on the ORISE competition post on Facebook or Instagram, follow ORISE on social media, and fill out this (very short) survey!

For January 2021 ORISE is hosting two educator competitions!
January Social Media Contest

What better way to celebrate the New Year than with a new social media contest! Throughout the month of January, ORISE wants to know your best at-home STEM activities that students can complete from the comfort of their homes. To enter the contest, follow ORISE on social media, fill out this (very short) survey, and comment your activity on the Facebook post about this competition!
Prizes:
TWO randomly selected teachers will win sets of thirty at-home reusable lab kits for their classrooms!
Each kit will contain the following items:
- 50, 100, and 500 ml plastic Erlenmeyer flasks
- 100, 250, 500 ml plastic beakers
- 4 3 ml pipettes
- 50ml plastic graduated cylinder
- A roll of pH strips
- 4 8ml plastic test tubes with lids
- 1 test tube rack
- 1 pair of forceps
- Goggles
- Thermometer
- 1 plastic funnel
- 2 pairs of gloves
- 1 plastic stir rod
- 1 Pocket scale
- 1 plastic shoe box to contain the supplies

Not Your AVERAGE Lesson Plan Competition
Starts: 7:30 A.M. Eastern Time, Monday, January 1st
Deadline: on or before 11:59 P.M. Eastern Time, Sunday, January 31st
Graphing is where I draw the line. *Ba Dum Tss* We hope not, because the Oak Ridge Institute of Science and Education (ORISE) is asking you to whip out those ol’ excel sheets and graphing calculators for this month’s lesson plan competition! For this competition, we are asking teachers to create a STEM lesson plan that involves data collecting and graphing for a chance to win a mini-grant! THREE teachers will receive mini-grants of up to $1,500 to help buy equipment for their classrooms!
Prizes:
- 1st Place: $1,500.00
- 2nd Place: $1,000.00
- 3rd Place: $500.00
Details:
- Interested educators are invited to submit an original lesson plan to https://orausurvey.orau.org/n/NotYourAverageLessonPlan.aspx by 12 p.m. EST on Sunday, January 31, 2021.
- To avoid plagiarism, please submit a lesson plan that you have written. We understand that many activities are developed by other teachers; just make sure that you put your own spin on the activity.
- Lesson plan may focus on any topic as long as the lesson plan incorporates graphing and data collecting.
- Lesson plans should include the following:
- lesson title
- teacher name and school
- target grade level
- time required for lesson
- standards/objectives (NGSS or Common Core)
- materials required
- instructional steps for introduction, activities, and closure
- assessment strategies
- differentiation strategies
- Lesson plans will be scored using a rubric, and winners will be announced late February!
- Teachers must teach in the United States, a U.S. Territory, or a DoDEA school to be eligible to win.
- Teachers are eligible to win 2 ORISE competitions in a 12 month period.

With the holidays right around the corner, Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) thinks it’s time for a break from lesson plans. In September, teachers shared with the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education their best hands-on STEM lesson plans for the opportunity to win drones for their classrooms.
