The lesser prairie-chicken is a ground-dwelling bird native to Kansas, Colorado, Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Texas. The main threat facing the lesser prairie-chicken is the loss of habitat needed for survival caused by converting prairie to cropland, livestock overgrazing, oil and gas development, and building roads and power lines.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) managed by the Farm Service Agency has improved and increased lesser prairie-chicken habitat by providing large areas of grasslands and grassland connectivity. Created 35 years ago this month, CRP and is one of the largest private-lands conservation programs.
