Tanzania

AGOA Status: Tanzania is eligible for African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) benefits this year. It also qualifies for textile and apparel benefits.

Trade Agreements: The U.S. signed Trade and Investment Framework Agreements (TIFA) with the East African Community (EAC) in 2008, and with the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) in 2001. Tanzania is a member of both the EAC and COMESA regional organizations. USTR’s Africa Office is also leading U.S. efforts to forge a new trade and investment partnership with the East African Community.

Tanzania is currently our 121st largest goods trading partner with $462 million in total (two way) goods trade during 2019. Goods exports totaled $333 million; goods imports totaled $130 million. The U.S. goods trade surplus with Tanzania was $203 million in 2019.

Exports

  • Tanzania was the United States' 118th largest goods export market in 2019.
  • U.S. goods exports to Tanzania in 2019 were $333 million, up 0.2% ($607 thousand) from 2018 and up 110.5% from 2009. 
  • The top export categories (2-digit HS) in 2019 were: aircraft ($175 million), machinery ($27 million), cereals (wheat) ($23 million), plastics ($19 million), and milling products ($9 million).
  • U.S. total exports of agricultural products to Tanzania totaled $47 million in 2019. Leading domestic export categories include: wheat ($23 million), prepared food ($3 million), pulses ($3 million), vegetable oils (ex. soybean) ($3 million), and poultry meat & products (ex. eggs) ($2 million).

Imports

  • Tanzania was the United States' 119th largest supplier of goods imports in 2019.
  • U.S. goods imports from Tanzania totaled $130 million in 2019, up 34.2% ($33 million) from 2018, and up 162.7% from 2009. 
  • The top import categories (2-digit HS) in 2019 were: precious metal and stone (other stones, not strung) ($41 million), knit apparel ($29 million), woven apparel ($23 million), coffee, tea & spice (coffee) ($10 million), and vegetable saps and extracts (pectates) ($6 million).
  • U.S. total imports of agricultural products from Tanzania totaled $24 million in 2019. Leading categories include: unroasted coffee ($9 million), cocoa beans ($2 million), planting seeds ($2 million), tree nuts ($1 million), and spices ($321 thousand).

Trade Balance

  • The U.S. goods trade surplus with Tanzania was $203 million in 2019, a 13.8% decrease ($33 million) over 2018.

Investment
