HUD's Renew300 Initiative aims to help federally assisted housing properties manage utility costs through the installation of onsite or community-based renewable energy technology. The 300 Megawatt (MW) target makes use of millions of federally subsidized roofs with on-site or community generation potential. Supported renewable energy technologies include Solar PV and Solar thermal, wind, geothermal, small biomass, combined heat and power, and small hydro projects.

• 300 Megawatts of solar is enough to fully power 50,000 homes. In practice, the renewable energy developed through this initiative will supplement traditional energy sources for living spaces and common areas at thousands of HUD-assisted Multifamily and Public Housing properties by 2020.
• Renew300 helps achieve American goals of supporting domestic energy sources and energy independence.
• Providing nearly 400,000 jobs and growing, onsite solar energy generation is an economic driver and creates good, local jobs for community residents. And solar installation jobs are well paying; an average worker makes over $19/hour.
• Renewable energy costs have dropped precipitously over the past decade. Renew 300 focuses on places where a switch to renewable energy leads to a reduction in utility expenditures. In 20 U.S. states, residential solar was cheaper per kilowatt-hour than traditional electricity in 2016, and 42 states are expected to reach that milestone by 2020 under business-as-usual conditions.

To Acheive Renew300 Goals, HUD is:

• Working to simplify project completion and approval by developing voluntary standardized templates, toolkits, and power purchase agreements (PPAs) for federally subsidized housing managers and owners.
• Connecting stakeholders by convening renewable energy, housing, and financial experts in workshops and webinars to discuss barriers and opportunities related to the renewable energy target.
• Providing technical assistance to affordable housing organizations pursuing renewable energy projects.
• Setting a renewable energy baseline and tracking progress
