National Scientific User Facilities

Propelling discovery

Argonne is home to five national user facilities, which enable scientific users from universities, national laboratories, industry and federal agencies to carry out experiments and pursue groundbreaking discoveries that would otherwise not be possible.

Our user facilities, which require resource commitments well beyond the scope of any non-government institution, provide Argonne scientists—and those who visit us from all corners of the globe—with an extraordinary range of cutting-edge scientific tools that support in-depth research, drive technological breakthroughs, and improve U.S. competitiveness and quality of life.

Our five flagship facilities support nearly 8,000 users annually—one of the largest user communities in the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) complex.

The DOE’s Office of Science provides base funding for all of these facilities. With DOE’s help, Argonne works to sustain and enhance these facilities to enable breakthrough user science.
