Overview

Harrison Lake National Fish Hatchery was established in the 1930s to provide warm-water fish for stocking in lakes and ponds. Harrison Lake National Fish Hatchery has produced and stocked 118 million American shad for restoration projects in Virginia and Maryland. The hatchery also rears smaller numbers of alewife and blueback herring, hickory shad, and striped bass to support research and conservation actions for these valuable commercial and recreational species. More recently, the hatchery added the production of native freshwater mussels. The hatchery is growing and stocking mussels to recover imperiled species and to restore biomass of these ecologically important filter feeders.
