Craig Brook National Fish Hatchery was established in 1889 to raise and stock juvenile Atlantic salmon for Maine waters. Craig Brook currently supports seven river specific brood stocks of Atlantic salmon. The Species is ProtectedWild and hatchery reared Atlantic salmon in eight of Maine's smaller rivers were listed as endangered under the protection of the Endangered Species Act in December 2000. In July 2009 Atlantic salmon populations of the Penobscot, Kennebec and Androscoggin rivers were added for protection, along with a designation of critical habitat for the entire geographic range of wild salmon in Maine.
