Administrative Orders

Administrative Orders are enforceable orders issued by a public authority (under the powers conferred to it by one or more statutes) to an individual or an organization to take certain corrective action, or to refrain from an activity.

There are several types of Administrative Orders.
Executive Orders are directives issued by the President of the United States that manages operations of the federal government and has the force of law.

The Secretary of the Interior, the ultimate decision-maker in the Department, periodically issues Secretarial Orders which embody decisions on important topics. Secretarial Orders can be made permanent when they are converted to chapters in the Departmental Manual.

Director's Orders are used to announce and implement temporary policy and procedures; delegations of authority; emergency policy; special assignments or functions; and initial statements establishing new organizational units or transferring functions until they can be documented in the Departmental Manual and Service Manual, as required.
