Content and Production Grants

CPB invests limited funds in the production of innovative, diverse content that aligns with CPB’s mission—to provide universal access to high-quality educational programming, especially to underserved audiences. CPB-supported content must be distributed through public media outlets, and with that in mind, collaborative ventures between independent producers and public media stations are highly encouraged. Support from the funds listed below is subject to availability and system content needs.

TV & Online Video Content

The General Program Fund backs public television content of significant educational or cultural value that U.S. viewers simply would not find elsewhere. Grants from the General Program Fund supported acclaimed documentaries such as The Roosevelts: An Intimate History and The Brain with David Eagleman as well as engaging children’s content like Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood and Odd Squad.

The Diversity and Innovation Fund promotes public television and digital projects that include a production team with diverse staff in key editorial positions (i.e. executive producer, producer, writer); a proven track record of creating quality programming; and the potential to generate a high level of interest and engagement among diverse communities. Past projects include On Two Fronts: Latinos & Vietnam, 180 Days: Hartsville and Ice Warriors – USA Sled Hockey.

Radio

The Radio Program Fund supports the development of new public radio services and series, urgent or timely content, the work of independent radio producers, programming for underserved and unserved audiences, and the development of innovative content forms. Recipients include StoryCorps and The Moth Radio Hour.
