  Your Sanctuary Television Program
Access Monterey Peninsula (AMP) is launching a new television program entitled Your Sanctuary. This program showcases national marine sanctuaries, especially your Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, the resources it protects, the recreation it supports, and the businesses dependent upon a healthy ocean environment.

One of the key objectives of the Your Sanctuary program is to introduce viewers to the beauty and resources of the MBNMS, while providing education on the ways people can contribute to preserving and protecting this national treasure. Your Sanctuary connects viewers to the special places of Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, as well as to the network of sanctuaries across the country and to our territories in the South Pacific.

Awareness of the importance of healthy oceans is a priority, and Access Monterey Peninsula is instrumental in providing the conduit to bring this message to residents via cable cast, internet streaming, video on demand, and mobile phone application.

Special Episode - Ocean Champions with Leon Panetta (duration 30:02)

An exclusive interview with Monterey County Hero and current U.S. Secretary of Defense, Leon Panetta. While serving in Congress, Secretary Panetta played a major role in creating the largest National Marine Sanctuary in the US. "Growing up as a kid in Monterey gave me a deep appreciation for how important our oceans are" remarked the Secretary. "We have amazing parks such as Yosemite and Yellowstone. We should also protect our oceans in a way that preserves them for generations to come." Secretary Panetta's interview with Sanctuary Superintendent Paul Michel is a special program of the "Your Sanctuary" series.

Episode 4 - The Power of Film (duration 29:17)

We have all experienced the power of a good film - they have the ability to move us. Environmental films were just beginning to hit television when Jacques Cousteau captured the world with National Geographic's "Undersea Voyages." That early virtual experience changed many lives. Today, ocean and wildlife programs abound. Many fascinate us, some surprise us, while others inspire us to take action. Internationally acclaimed filmmakers Greg MacGillivray, Bob Talbot, and Mark Shelley contribute their wisdom, ocean philosophy, and gorgeous video clips. Bob Talbot reveals tantalizing images from the upcoming MBNMS Exploration Center exhibit in Santa Cruz. Mark Shelley discusses his newly released Otter 501 and renowned Ocean Champions Sylvia Earle and Greg MacGillivray discuss OneWorldOneOcean in a piece with glorious footage from beneath and above the waves.

Episode 3 - From Whaling to Watching (duration 28:02)

Take a look at Monterey's historic and modern day dependence on the great whales visiting our Bay. From the Gray whales of winter to the Humpbacks of spring and summer - these massive marine mammals continue to be key economic generators for local business. Retired State Park Ranger and local Gray whale expert, Jerry Loomis shares some of the local history and lore. Steve Stagnero of Santa Cruz Whale Watch discusses their switch from fishing to whale watching in today's economy and Sanctuary Cruises of Moss Landing is also featured. Some critical work on vessel traffic lanes at Stellwagen Bank NMS is shared and Maris Sidenstecker is the episode's hero.

Episode 2 - Marine Debris (duration 23:43)

Our actions on land are reflected in the sea and ocean pollution emphasizes this connection. Guest Laura Kasa from Save Our Shores highlights their effort to reduce land-based waste form entering the sanctuary and Deputy Superintendent Karen Grimmer shares the sanctuary's efforts to remove lost fishing gear from the seafloor. The City of Watsonville is highlighted for it's efforts to keep solid waste from our waterways and Pacific Grove Middle School is commended for their efforts to protect animals from the dangers of latex balloons.

Episode 1 - The Seafloor (duration 25:02)

Explore the deep seafloor of Monterey Bay with sanctuary Research Coordinator Dr. Andrew DeVolegaere and Dr. James Lindholm, Director of CSUMB's Institute for Applied Marine Ecology. Discover some of the interesting creatures they encounter and how technology enables us to see and study the seafloor more effectively than ever before.
