COVID-19 Information

Madagascar Country-Specific Information:
Madagascar ended its State of Health Emergency on October 18. The number of daily new COVID-19 cases has trended down from peak levels in July and remained low over the past two months. Travel within Madagascar is now allowed. International flights to Nosy Be are allowed but other airports remain closed to international passengers. There is no longer a curfew in place. Gatherings of more than 200 people remain prohibited. Mask wearing in public is mandatory. Universities are still not open but academic exams are being administered, and the American School began its academic year September 1 with a combination of virtual and on-premises classes on.
Entry and Exit Requirements:
- Are U.S. citizens permitted to enter? Yes, but to Nosy Be only.
- Is a negative COVID-19 test (PCR and/or serology) required for entry? Yes
- Are health screening procedures in place at airports and other ports of entry? Yes
- For free visa extensions (30 days renewable due to lockdown), travelers should go to the nearest Ministry of Interior, Immigration/Emigration office. This applies only for those who are stuck in Madagascar because of the suspension of flights and travel restrictions.
Movement Restrictions:
- Is a curfew in place? No
- Are there restrictions on intercity or interstate travel? No, with the exception of travel from Nosy Be to the mainland.
Quarantine Information:
- Are U.S. citizens required to quarantine? Yes (but currently U.S. citizens can’t enter)
- Free testing is provided at the airport upon arrival in Nosy Be. Visitors are required to quarantine until COVID-19 test results come back.
COVID-19 Testing:
- Polyclinique Ilafy and Hospital Manarapenitra Andenatepenaka offer PCR tests for COVID-19. Institut Pasteur offers serological tests for COVID-19.
Transportation Options:
- Are commercial flights operating? Domestically and to Nosy Be.
- Is public transportation operating? Yes
- Hand gel is provided. Passengers, drivers, and assistants all must wear masks.
Fines for Non-Compliance:
- Failure to wear a mask in public can result in arrest for 24 hours.

COMOROS
Country-Specific Information:
- Is a curfew in place? Yes
- Are there restrictions on intercity or interstate travel? No
Quarantine Information:
- Are U.S. citizens required to quarantine? Yes
- Quarantine is required for those who do not arrive with a negative PCR test. Other travelers are quarantined for 3-5 days at a designated hotel until the results of the PCR test come back negative.
COVID-19 Testing:
- COVID-19 testing is available at the former office of the Anti-malaria Project. The cost is 30,000 Comorian Francs (approximately 72 USD)
Transportation Options:
- Are commercial flights operating? Yes, but limited
- Is public transportation operating? Yes
- Masks are required.
Fines for Non-Compliance:
- Fines of 7500 Comorian Francs (approximately 18 USD) exist for not complying with mask requirements.
