The membership benefit that pays.

No one knows how beneficial IEEE membership is to technical and career development better than IEEE members.

Consider sharing your IEEE membership experience and get rewarded for doing so. Through the Member-Get-a-Member program, IEEE rewards your efforts in recruiting new members. Your local IEEE Section can also benefit.

Recruiter awards

For each new member you recruit, you earn an award which can be used toward IEEE dues, IEEE Society fees or the purchase of IEEE products and services. During the 2011 membership year (16 August 2010 through 15 August 2011), the IEEE MGM Program offers the following award schedule to members who recruit other individuals into IEEE membership.

Professional Members can earn:

  • US$15 for each Professional member recruited;
  • US$5 for each Professional member recruited to e-Membership (offered in developing nations only);
  • The maximum amount a member can earn during the membership year is US$90.

Student Members can earn:

  • US$2 for each Student or Graduate Student member recruited;
  • US$15 for each Professional member recruited;
  • US$5 for each Professional member recruited to e-Membership (offered in developing nations only);
  • The maximum amount a member can earn during the membership year is US$90.

Section awards

Your local section can also benefit by your participation in the MGM program.

Regional awards:  The top five recruiters in each IEEE geographic region will earn membership development awards for their Section, to help underwrite the sections’ local programs and activities. Within each region, five awards will be given to the recruiters' section:

  • First Place - US$500.00
  • Second Place - US$400.00
  • Third Place - US$300.00
  • Fourth Place - US$200.00
  • Fifth Place - US$100.00

Overall IEEE award:  The top recruiter in IEEE earns an additional US$500 award for his/her Section.

Additional rules apply to Section awards.

Tips on recruiting new members

  • Invite a prospective colleague/student to attend an IEEE Section/Chapter/Branch meeting to experience first-hand the professional benefits of IEEE membership.
  • Start a discussion about IEEE membership, emphasizing the benefits and value – be sure to provide a brochure and/or application information.
  • Keep issues of IEEE Spectrum, IEEE Potentials and IEEE Society publications on display to attract the eyes of potential new members.
  • Publish an article in your company or university publications explaining how IEEE helped you.
  • Post announcements of IEEE meetings/conferences.
  • Welcome your company/university’s newly hired or enrolled individuals - use the opportunity to discuss IEEE.
  • When discussing membership with a prospect, listen for clues as to what they look for in a professional society. Stress those member benefits that meet their needs.
  • Coordinate an event at your place of employment.

Rules of the program

  1. Only open to current IEEE members (Society affiliates, non-members and past members are not eligible).
  2. Completed applications (either print or online), with full dues payment, must be submitted with the recruiter’s membership number in the proper recruiter box that is provided on the application (or the 'Referring Member Number' field in the online application).
  3. Applications received without a recruiter's valid membership number will be disqualified – there will be no retroactive qualifying of recruiters.
  4. Applications must be received at IEEE before 15 August 2011.
  5. Professional members are not eligible to receive awards for recruiting IEEE Students or IEEE Graduate Students.
  6. All amounts are quoted in US Dollars.
  7. There is a maximum award amount of US$90 for the 2011 membership year.
  8. Recruiters will be notified of their awards earned in October 2011.
  9. Awards will be valid toward IEEE dues, IEEE Society fees, IEEE products and services, or toward the purchase of IEEE merchandise site eCertificates*. In addition, at your option the value of the award may be donated to the IEEE Foundation or another IEEE fund.
  10. The Member Get-A-Member award may not be combined with other membership incentive programs such as discounted Society conference membership promotions.
  11. IEEE MGM awards earned for the 2011 membership year are not redeemable for cash and will expire on 31 December 2011.
  12. Section awards: The top five recruiters in each region are determined by: a. the total number of members recruited, and b. only from those individuals who, as a result of their efforts, earned the maximum US$90 individual award. In the event of a tie, the section award will be split evenly.
  13. Individual and section awards are subject to federal laws and certain countries are not eligible.

*Special note on the purchase and use of IEEE Merchandise eCertificates: The IEEE merchandise site is operated and maintained by a third party and not by IEEE. IEEE merchandise eCertificates are available in denominations of US$5, $10, $25 and $50 and are valid for use only at the IEEE Merchandise site. eCertificates are non-refundable and are valid for one year from the date of issue. If you wish to redeem all or part of your MGM award for IEEE merchandise eCertificates, you must do this through the IEEE Contact Center. They will place your order for the eCertificates, and you will receive them via e-mail within two weeks. A valid e-mail address is required. Before you choose to order or redeem your eCertificates at the IEEE Merchandise site, be sure to review the site’s shipping rates and policies – in certain countries shipping rates may be higher. If your order total, including shipping, is more than the amount of your eCertificate, you will be responsible for the balance due.
