Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a progressive lung disease that can cause coughing wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and other symptoms. Cigarette smoking is the leading cause of COPD, however, up to 25 percent of people with the condition have never smoked. Long-term exposure to lung irritants—such as air pollution, chemical fumes, or dusts—also may contribute to COPD. A rare genetic condition called alpha-1 antitrypsin (AAT) deficiency can also cause the disease. For many Veterans, combat deployments exposed them to potentially toxic lung irritants, and VA conducts research to improve care for those Veterans coping with COPD.
