PO.DAAC Drive provides an FTP alternative for browsing and retrieving data at PO.DAAC.  It offers file navigation and download through an interface served directly through your browser, and with a familiar look and feel.  It also allows users to access data via a command line so that interactions can be easily scripted.  As a new feature, thanks to the underlying open technologies,  it also enables mounting the remote data to your own local computer, seeing the data as if you had the entire PO.DAAC archive mounted on your own machine.

OPeNDAP enables remote datasets to be accessed through familiar data analysis and visualization packages, just as if they resided locally on the user's machine. OPeNDAP handles transport, translation and subsetting of data residing in most Earth science data formats. For a list of PO.DAAC data accessible through OPeNDAP, see PO.DAAC OPeNDAP data.

PO.DAAC Web Services are application programming interfaces (APIs) that can be accessed through standard web protocols.  The W3C defines a Web Service in part as, "A software system designed to support interoperable machine-to-machine interaction over a network," (for the full definition, see http://www.w3.org/TR/ws-arch/#whatis ). The PO.DAAC Web Services use a Representational State Transfer (REST) model with calls issued over a Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) connection.  On receipt of a request message, our services return the response in either an Extensible Markup Language (XML) structure or, optionally, a JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) format.

SOTO is a suite of tools presented through an interactive, web-based visualization front end. It provides access to a broad range of satellite-derived products and key parameters of interest to the oceanographic community. SOTO facilitates visual exploration and comparative analysis of physical oceanographic data, enabling scientific oceanographic, climate, and related research.

  • To best experience SOTO, we recommend using a recent version of one of the following browsers:  Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, or Apple Safari.  (Note that Internet Explorer is not currently supported.)  Additionally, we recommend that prior to first loading the new SOTO, you clear your browser's cache.

High-level Tool for Interactive Data Extraction / L2 Subsetting Services (HiTIDE)  allows users to subset and download popular PO.DAAC level 2 (swath) datasets. Users can search across a wide variety of parameters, such as variables, sensors and platforms, and filter the resulting data based on spatial and temporal boundaries of interest to the user. HiTIDE goes even further, offering instant previews of variable imagery, allowing users to rapidly find data of interest for download and further, rigorous scientific analysis. HiTIDE's user interface is powered by a set of web services that facilitate machine to machine interoperability.

LAS is a web-based L3 data visualization and subsetting tool, designed to provide flexible access to geo-referenced scientific data. It enables the web user to: visualize data with on-the-fly graphics; request custom subsets of variables in a choice of file formats; access background reference material about the data (metadata); compare (difference) variables from distributed locations.

PO.DAAC created a GitHub for hosting all PO.DAAC code. Each record in the inventory was tagged with labels to indicate the language of the script and the functionality. A standard Apache 2.0 license  was also added to the script. Each script was added to PO.DAAC’s GitHub and exposed to code.nasa.gov through a JSON file.
