About Attendance Works

Attendance Works is a national and state initiative that promotes better policy and practice around school attendance. We promote tracking chronic absence data for each student beginning in kindergarten, or ideally earlier, and partnering with families and community agencies to intervene when poor attendance is a problem for students or schools.

Can States Use Absenteeism as ESSA Metric?

Unknown States are making plans for at least one indicator to measure school quality or student success under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). Our two-page brief clearly shows how the chronic absence rate, either alone or as a part of an index, is among the best measures that states could choose to fulfill this requirement.
