So, what is AmeriCorps Seniors?

AmeriCorps Seniors is a network of national service programs for Americans 55 years and older, made up of three primary programs that each take a different approach to improving lives and fostering civic engagement. AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers commit their time to address critical community needs including academic tutoring and mentoring, elderly care, disaster relief support, and more.

How does AmeriCorps Seniors get things done?

AmeriCorps Seniors connects more than 200,000 Americans to service opportunities in their communities. AmeriCorps Seniors volunteers use their acquired skills, knowledge, and experience to make a difference to individuals, non-profits, and faith-based and other community organizations throughout the United States.

Can you give me some examples, please?

Of course! Here are just a few examples:

  • Tutor and mentor students
  • Provide one-on-one-time to students in busy classrooms
  • Help students increase their reading levels
  • Tutor students in math and writing skills
  • Help elderly seniors stay independent and remain in their homes
  • Drive individuals to doctor's appointments
  • Provide a much-needed break to caregivers and families
  • Provide friendship and companionship
  • Help veterans find jobs
  • Organize volunteers
  • Rebuild after disasters
  • Provide free tax services
  • Tackle environmental issues.

Why is it a “Corps”?

Similar to the Military or AmeriCorps, it’s another form of service to our country.

But it looks different than it sounds - Correct, it’s pronounced like (kôr) core of the earth or core of an apple, but spelled with a silent “p”.

Why should someone be an AmeriCorps Seniors volunteer?

To make our people safer, stronger and healthier; to strengthen our communities; and to get things done for America.
