February: American Heart Month
This February, Million Hearts® is challenging men to start one new, heart-healthy behavior. Simple changes can make a big difference!

March: National Nutrition Month
In March, Million Hearts® focuses on educating the importance of heart-healthy eating—without sacrificing taste—through nutrition information, tasty recipes, and cooking and shopping tips.

May: National Stroke Awareness Month and National High Blood Pressure Education Month
In May, Million Hearts®highlights the need for increased awareness about stroke and ways to lower risk, as well as the importance of blood pressure control.

June: Men's Health Month
In June, Million Hearts® is encouraging men to take action for a heart-healthy and stroke-free life. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men, while stroke is their 5th leading cause of death. Men can help prevent heart disease and stroke by making healthy choices to lower their risk.

October: October 29 is World Stroke Day
On October 29, Million Hearts® will be sharing resources, videos, and social media messages to educate people about ways to prevent and treat stroke.

November: November 17 is the Great American Smokeout
Throughout November and beyond, Million Hearts® will share tobacco cessation messages and resources to empower people to quit tobacco.

Challenges

EHR Innovations for Improving Hypertension Challenge
January 2015
The goal of the EHR Innovations for Improving Hypertension Challenge, sponsored by Million Hearts® and the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, is to identify practices that have used clinical decision support to implement the most successful evidence-based blood pressure treatment protocols (Phase 1) and identify models for quickly and widely spreading these strategies to other practices (Phase 2).

Million Hearts® Risk Check Challenge
July 2012
Million Hearts® and the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology sponsored a developer challenge and outreach initiative to inform millions of Americans who may be unaware that they are at significant risk for heart disease and stroke. The winner, Marshfield Clinic Research Foundation, was announced in February 2013.

Million Hearts® Caregiver Video Challenge
July 2012
Caregivers play an important role in maintaining the heart health of their loved ones. Million Hearts® sponsored a video challenge for caregivers to share their stories and give tips for how to prevent or control high blood pressure.

Beat Down Blood Pressure Video Challenge
March 2012
In an effort to crowdsource better ways for the public and health care professionals to leverage technology and manage high blood pressure, Million Hearts® and the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology announced the Beat Down Blood Pressure Video Challenge.

Mind Your Risks and Act FAST to Prevent and Treat Strokes
May 2016
On May 17, 2016, in celebration of National Stroke Awareness Month and National High Blood Pressure Education Month, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention hosted a Public Health Grand Rounds. The webcast featured presentations from experts on how stroke is preventable and treatable, how women are affected differently, and what is being done to bridge the gaps in stroke treatment. AMGA's Measure Up/Pressure Down® National Hypertension Campaign Hosts Virtual Anniversary Event
December 2014
On December 4, 2014, Measure Up/Pressure Down® convened medical groups, health systems, partners, sponsors, and other supporters to celebrate the campaign's two-year anniversary. The event offered actionable strategies and tactics to help organizations improve hypertension control rates. Participating groups received awards recognizing their achievements, including the "Best Control" award presented by Million Hearts® Executive Director Dr. Janet Wright.

TEDMED 2012: What Do You Do When Your Best Shot Falls Short?
April 2012
At TEDMED 2012 in Washington, DC, Dr. Tom Frieden, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, asked, "What do you do when your best shot falls short?" Dr. Frieden discussed the importance of Million Hearts®, which he views as an initiative with a clear, definable objective that can be reached through aligning measures, simple modifications in care, and collaboration between public and private sector partners.
