“Heart of the Lakes” Videos Capture the Power of Nature

The importance of Great Lakes conservation comes alive in first-person digital stories.

A video series, “The Power of Nature,” makes a compelling case for Great Lakes’ conservation in Michigan through first-person stories and captivating visuals. Michigan’s Coastal Management Program provided initial funding for the first set of video stories from Heart of the Lakes, a conservation nonprofit. Their support grabbed the attention of other organizations and led the Saginaw Bay Watershed Initiative Network to provide funding for more stories.

A love of the Michigan coast runs deep in these video subjects, which include a sixth-generation cherry farmer, an urban conservationist introducing young people to the outdoors, and a military veteran who believes in the power of nature to heal.

About 25 land trusts and conservancies are members of Heart of the Lakes, which says its video series “communicates the importance of nature and natural resource protection that contributes to healthy, vibrant coasts in support of placemaking, tourism, business and talent attraction.” (2018)
