Yesterday, #President #Trump designated @FCC Commissioner Ajit Pai as the agency’s 34th #Chairman. Chairman Pai has served as a Commissioner at the @FCC since May #2012. His regulatory philosophy is informed by a few simple principles. 1)#Consumers benefit most from #competition, not preemptive #regulation. #Freemarkets have delivered more value to #American consumers than highly regulated ones. 2)No regulatory system should indulge arbitrage; regulators should be skeptical of pleas to regulate rivals, dispense favors, or otherwise afford special treatment. 3)Particularly given how rapidly the #communications sector is changing, the FCC should do everything it can to ensure that its rules reflect the realities of the current #marketplace and basic principles of #economics. 4)As a creature of #Congress, the FCC must respect the law as set forth by the #legislature. 5)The FCC is at its best when it proceeds on the basis of consensus; good communications policy knows no partisan affiliation. #FBF - On this day in 1838 in #NewJersey, Samuel #Morse first demonstrated the #telegraph. The telegraph transformed #communications, allowing for near-instantaneous sharing of news and information between cities, states and countries. In #1934, the @FCC was created by #Congress to ensure that #Americans had access to reasonably priced, rapid and efficient “wire and #radio #communication” services for defense and safety. In the 1930’s, the #technologies were limited to #telegraph, radio and #telephone. Today, the list of technologies has grown to include #television, #satellite, #mobile devices and the #Internet. On this day in 1861, the Pony Express was brought to an end by the opening of the transcontinental #telegraph. The miracle of moving mail from the east to the west coast in ten days meant little, when the telegraph could send near-instantaneous messages over the same distance. #FBF Telephone tokens were once common in both the United States and other parts of the world and were used to make calls at public #phones. The Scovill Manufacturing Company produced this telephone token during the early 20th century. #TBT Answering machines have largely been displaced by #digital messages but were common until quite recently. The earliest answering machines relied on magnetic recording, and their development can be traced back to design work by Oberlin Smith of the United States in 1878.
