Our Mission...

The Department of Labor serves all American workers. Its many activities affect virtually every family in our country. Our primary mission is to serve and protect American workers, prepare them for new and better jobs, and ensure the adequacy of America's workplaces. In serving and protecting workers, the Department of Labor ensures workers' rights, inspects work sites, shields workers from employment discrimination, administers unemployment insurance programs, collects and analyzes economic data, protects pension benefits, enforces workers' compensation and wage standards. The Department also sponsors training and retraining programs to help workers and veterans adapt to the demand for new skills in the ever-changing workforce.

Our History...

In the early 20th century, deplorable working conditions, child labor abuse, and lack of wage protection were just some of the issues that prompted the creation of the Department of Labor. In 1913, Congress created the Department as an agency dedicated to foster, promote, and develop the welfare of the American worker. This marked the culmination of nearly half a century of public demand for an agency that would be devoted exclusively to the welfare of American workers. The Department has been dedicated to helping workers adapt to the ever-changing conditions of the economy and the workplace.

and Our Future...

As we face the new challenges of the 21st-century, we need your talent, imagination, and dedication to public service to continue our tradition of excellence in serving the American people. If you want to have a part in reshaping the American workforce of the 21st-century, your place is with the Department of Labor.
