Consumer Health Information Specialization (CHIS) Sponsorship

Description of Award

The CHIS sponsorship program supports the mission of the Network of the National Library of Medicine, to advance the progress of medicine and improve the public health by providing all U.S. health professionals with equal access to biomedical information and improving the public's access to information to enable them to make informed decisions about their health.

Background/Purpose: 

Library staff are on the front lines of health information inquiries from their communities. The purpose of this program is to assist library staff with professional development and advancement to ensure they can meet the growing health information needs of their communities.

The CHIS certificate is provided by the Medical Library Association. In order to apply for a CHIS certificate, you must have completed a minimum of 12 CE credits in consumer health information. Classes are offered for free through the Network of the National Library of Medicine.

Eligibility: 

  • Any library staff member or library student in the U.S. interested in providing health information to the public.
  • The individual must be seeking a CHIS Level I or II certificate or a renewal of their CHIS Level I or II certificate.
