Funding Opportunities

2020-21 funding opportunities:
  • The Animal Welfare Institute (AWI) offers grants of up to $10,000 to develop and test innovative methods of refinement to the care, husbandry and housing of animals in research to improve their welfare. The deadline for this year's application is October 16.
  • The Alternatives Research and Development Foundation (ARDF) will be ready to accept applications to their Annual Open Grant program on January 20, 2021, with an application deadline of April 30, 2021
  • National Centre for the Replacement, Refinement and Reduction of Animals in Research (NC3Rs) fellowship program applications opens July 15th and ends September 15th.

American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS).

Grant applications are available online for the AALAS Grants for Laboratory Animal Science (GLAS) program. Examples of research interest are as follows: environmental conditions; housing and enrichment; pain and distress; health and welfare; euthanasia; and advancements in animal care and use.

Alternatives Research and Development Foundation (ARDF).

The Alternatives Research & Development Foundation (ARDF) supports the development, validation, and adoption of non-animal methods in biomedical research, product testing, and education.

Center for Alternatives to Animal Testing (CAAT).

CAAT’s research grants program is a centerpiece of their work, providing initial funding for scientists to develop alternatives to the use of animals in biomedical research and product safety testing. To date, the center has funded some 300 grants (including renewals) for a total of more than $6 million.

Center for Alternatives to Animal Testing (CAAT).

The Johns Hopkins Center for Alternatives to Animal Testing (CAAT) is part of the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health, with a European branch (CAAT-Europe) located at the University of Kostanz, Germany. CAAT promotes humane science by supporting the creation, development, validation, and use of alternatives to animals in research, product safety testing, and education.

NIH. NIEHS. National Toxicology Program.

NICEATM and ICCVAM seek to facilitate development of test methods that replace, reduce, and refine the use of animals in testing and protect human health, animal health, and the environment. This page lists announcements of funding opportunities intended to support the development of alternative test methods.

AAALAC International.

"The Global 3Rs Awards program will recognize significant innovative contributions toward the 3Rs of animal research to advance ethical science by any researcher (nominated author, principal investigator, or research team leader), in academia or industry in any area of biology (e.g., basic science, discovery, development, teaching, testing, manufacture for new medicines, vaccines, medical devices or healthcare products for humans and animals)."

National Centre for the Replacement, Refinement and Reduction of Animals in Research (NC3Rs).

Each year the NC3Rs awards a prize, sponsored by GlaxoSmithKline, to highlight an outstanding original contribution to scientific and technological advances in the 3Rs, published in the last three years.

Universities Federation for Animal Welfare.

The Universities Federation for Animal Welfare (UFAW) is offering a grant of up to £20,000 for innovative research or other proposals which will advance the Replacement, Refinement or Reduction of the use of animals in scientific research or testing.
