The cost of manufacturing the penny and nickel cost each American citizen $9.58 in 2011. That's $3 billion just to continue printing pennies and nickels. I think it's time to do away with both.

  13. Have you been following our anniversary celebrations this year? For those who just joined our community, we have been celebrating the 220th anniversary of our organization and the 150th anniversary of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP). This month, let’s take a look at some of the Presidents that have appeared on our Nation’s coins and currency!
  14. In the early 1990s, the BEP produced some currency on a web-fed rotary press. Using a roll of paper instead of sheets, the new press printed both sides of the notes in a single pass. The press was used until 1995; it was unable to sustain the long production runs for which it was intended, and it was discontinued.
  15. Since 1968 all notes have been printed by the dry intaglio printing method.
  16. BEP Fun Fact: A master printer, working at full speed, could produce approximately 40 sheets per hour, using a hand-operated spider press. Power presses were capable of printing 900 sheets per hour. In 1957, the first high-speed rotary press was capable of producing 2,400 sheets an hour.
  17. BEP Fun Fact: Until the 1940s, the printers had to polish an inked plate with the palms of their hands. This polishing required skill and judgment; every trace of ink had to be removed from the surface of the plate without disturbing the ink that lay in the engraved lines.
  18. Power presses first appeared at the BEP in 1878. These presses incorporated the same basic principles of the hand press, but the printing, inking, and wiping were performed simultaneously through the continuous movement of four plates around a square frame.
