    Van Cliburn, the legendary pianist who helped smooth the tensions during the height of the Cold War, died yesterday at 78.

    Cliburn performed during the first state visit by a U.S. President to the Soviet Union, when President Nixon visited in May 1972.

He captured and held the attention of the hundreds that were in attendance of his speech, with ages ranging from 5 to 95. Humes has a way of painting a picture with words like no other.

    He was in Orange County at the invitation of Congressman Ed Royce, new chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, to attend a series of events to highlight the U.S.-Korea relationship.
