Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications

This Department covers a broad range of socio-economic sectors, from health, food and agriculture to the environment, water resources and industry. It assists Member States meet their development needs through nuclear science, technology and innovation. It also works with laboratories, universities and research facilities worldwide through the IAEA Collaborating Centre scheme.

Deputy Director General of Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications
Aldo Malavasi was appointed Deputy Director General of the Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications on 30 July 2014. Prior to his appointment, he was Director President of the Medfly and Mosquito Facility Brazil in Juazeiro. Read more →
Division of Physical and Chemical Sciences
The Division assists Member States with capacity-building, research and development in the nuclear sciences and supports them in using nuclear methods for a variety of practical industrial applications. It supports needs-based development efforts through coordinated research projects and provides assistance on scientific and technical aspects of IAEA technical cooperation projects. Read more →
Division of Human Health
A key objective of the Division is to support Member States’ fight against cancer, cardiovascular diseases and malnutrition and other diseases using nuclear and nuclear-related techniques. This is accomplished through support of cancer radiotherapy treatment and diagnostic imaging projects, as well as support of nutrition centres and human resource development. Additional activities include the development of guidelines; databases; providing a quality assurance framework and review missions; providing technical, advisory and dosimetry laboratory services; as well as educational and research initiatives. Division of IAEA Environment Laboratories
This Division comprises four separate laboratories that together constitute the IAEA's Environment Laboratories. They use nuclear and isotopic techniques to understand and propose mitigation strategies and tools for the environmental impacts of radionuclides, trace elements and organic contaminants, as well as climate change, habitat destruction and biodiversity loss. Seibersdorf laboratories
The IAEA maintains eight nuclear applications laboratories in Seibersdorf, Austria. They support and implement activities that respond to the developmental needs of Member States in a range of subject areas, conduct applied research and development, deliver training and capacity-building to Member States and provide technical and analytical services. Joint FAO/IAEA Division of Nuclear Techniques in Food and Agriculture
The Joint Division advances and supports the safe and appropriate use by FAO and IAEA Member States of nuclear and related technologies in food and agriculture, aiming to contribute to global food security and sustainable agricultural development worldwide. It does so through adaptive research and development at its own laboratories in Seibersdorf as well as through annual support and coordination of more than 25 coordinated research projects involving some 400 research institutions and experimental stations; capacity-building and technology transfer to over 200 national and regional technical cooperation projects; and technical and policy advice to policymakers.
