For more than 60 years, NIAID research has led to new therapies, vaccines, diagnostic tests, and other technologies that have improved the health of millions of people in the United States and around the world.

HIV and Emerging Infectious Diseases

NIAID and the NIH Warren G. Magnuson Clinical Center conduct clinical research on HIV infection, chronic viral hepatitis (hepatitis B and C), other immunologic disorders, and emerging infectious diseases.

Laboratory of Infectious Diseases

The NIAID Laboratory of Infectious Diseases (LID) has a long history of discovering new agents of viral diseases and developing innovative vaccines and treatments such as FluMist, a nasal spray influenza vaccine; Synagis, a preventative treatment for respiratory syncytial virus; and Havrix, a hepatitis A vaccine licensed by GlaxoSmithKline.

NIAID Primary Immune Deficiency Clinic

The NIAID Primary Immune Deficiency (PID) Clinic is located at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Clinical Center and is dedicated to research on the more than 200 forms of primary immune deficiency diseases affecting approximately 500,000 people in the United States.

Vaccine Research Center Clinical Studies

At the Vaccine Research Center (VRC), we conduct clinical research studies that are vital to developing vaccines that ease human suffering, can potentially prevent a pandemic, and in many cases, save lives. We work closely with volunteers in our clinical studies to evaluate vaccines against diseases such as HIV/AIDS, Ebola, flu, and others.

Volunteer for COVID-19 Clinical Trials

NIAID is conducting and supporting clinical trials evaluating therapies and vaccine candidates against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus type 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the virus that causes coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), as well as studies of people who have recovered from infection.
