Luggage checked at the airport for transfer on passenger planes offers endless ways to hide potential threats. Checked baggage screening systemTo ensure that this baggage is screened for current and emerging threats, the EXD is working to improve explosives detection systems to reduce false alarm rates and increase the number of threats the systems can detect, which will in turn reduce the need for screeners to open baggage. It will also increase the number of bags that can be screened, which is key to achieving maximum safety while improving traveler experience.

EXD is also working with the Transportation Security Administration to develop the next generation of screening devices. Leveraging the expertise of university research teams, EXD is supporting the development of new technologies for improving standard x-ray imaging, which is commonly used to allow screeners to differentiate between objects.
