Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction Office

The DHS Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction Office (CWMD) works to prevent attacks against the United States using a weapon of mass destruction (WMD) through timely, responsive support to operational partners.

On December 21, 2018, President Trump signed the Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction Act to fully establish and authorize DHS CWMD within the Department.

Mission

Enable operational partners to prevent WMD use against the Homeland and promote readiness for chemical, biological, nuclear, and health security threats.

Strategic Goals

  • Anticipate, identify, and assess current and emerging WMD threats.
  • Strengthen detection and disruption of CBRN threats to the homeland.
  • Synchronize homeland counter-WMD and health security planning and execution.

Organization and Leadership

DHS CWMD is led by its Assistant Secretary David Richardson.
