USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service has identified significant issues with the accuracy of state-reported data as a result of COVID-19. FNS will not be releasing program data for the month of May at this time. FNS is actively working with states and will release the data once accuracy issues are addressed. |
The Program Data site provides selected statistical information on activity in all major Food and Nutrition Service Programs (FNS). These include the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP); the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC); child nutrition programs (National School Lunch, School Breakfast, Child and Adult Care, Summer Food Service and Special Milk); and food distribution programs (Schools, Emergency Food Assistance, Indian Reservations, Commodity Supplemental, Nutrition for the Elderly, and Charitable Institutions).
Four types of tables are provided: historical summaries, annual state level data for selected elements, monthly national level data for major programs, and the latest available month for state-level participation in major programs. The summaries begin with 1969, the year that FNS was established to administer the Department of Agriculture's nutrition assistance programs. Data are provided by federal fiscal year rather than calendar or school year. This includes the months of October through September (prior to FY 1977, it covered July through June). Annual state-level tables include data for the five most recent complete years (2015-2019). The latest month for state-level activity is April 2020. Data are as of July 2020; FY 2019 and 2020 numbers are preliminary and are subject to significant revision.

COVID-19 Data Notes* FNS’s preliminary data also shows that some states are incorrectly combining PEBT and SNAP participation and issuance in their monthly reporting to the Agency. FNS is currently working with its state partners to clarify reporting guidance for PEBT to correct these reporting issues. This will include requiring states to revise prior month reporting to correct errors as appropriate. ^^ Note: The average daily participation for CN programs is calculated by taking into account meals served and days of operation. However, the COVID-19 emergency - including the waivers and flexibilities that have been provided - has introduced considerable variability in the data, especially surrounding the number of days of operation. Therefore, for this period, this report reflects the number of meals served for CN programs versus the number of children participating.
SNAP Data: 2018-2019 Reporting NoteNorth Carolina’s SNAP participation data, which was excluded from monthly national participation data from January 2018 through November 2019 due to reporting issues at the state level, is once again included in December 2019 national SNAP participation data. Though national SNAP participation numbers are higher for December 2019 than in previous months, this is due to the inclusion of North Carolina in the data and not an actual increase in participation. |
