The Comparative Medicine Branch (CMB) of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), National Institutes of Health (NIH), Research Triangle Park, North Carolina is recruiting a Staff Scientist for the Veterinary Medicine Section (VMS) under the leadership of Dr. Terry Blankenship-Paris, Head. CMB supports over 150 active animal research projects for scientists in the Division of Intramural Research and the National Toxicology Program. A daily inventory of over 40,000 rodents is maintained. CMB ensures that all animal use is performed humanely and in accordance with all Public Health Service policies and federal regulations. The NIEHS Animal Care and Use Program has maintained full accreditation by the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC) International since 1972. The VMS is a service core within CMB combining surgical/clinical services, research, training, and regulatory compliance with all animal research regulations.

The Staff Scientist, working under the direction of the Head, VMS will have responsibilities for (but not limited to):

  1. Conducting animal study protocol and program review
  2. Contributing to development and application of animal research refinement
  3. Oversight of animal research projects
  4. Clinical oversight of rodent colonies
  5. Rodent surgical planning, assistance, and performance
  6. Investigator consultation on anesthesia, protocol preparation, and technically difficult procedures
  7. Investigator training on complex rodent instrumentation, including rodent imaging

A Staff Scientist is an NIH employee generally appointed to a time-limited, renewable position to support the long-term research of a Principal Investigator. Staff Scientists do not receive independent resources, although they often work independently and have sophisticated skills and knowledge essential to the work of the laboratory. Staff Scientists should be capable of independent work. The Staff Scientist in this position will conduct small research studies on animal use refinement and provide training for other laboratory staff, including laboratory animal residents and technicians.

Qualifications
Candidates must possess a DVM degree, boarded by or board eligible with the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine, 3+ years experience with rodent animal models including environmental toxicity exposure studies, evidence of successfully working both independently and as a member of a team, and excellent oral and written communication skills. At least one year of experience in animal care and use committee proceedings, post approval study monitoring, and training of investigators is essential.

Salary/Benefits
This is a federal full-time equivalent position, and a comprehensive benefits package is available. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
