Our Mission

The Office of the Chief Learning Officer (CLO) provides professional and technical training to enable NWS employees to reach optimum performance in present assignments and future responsibilities. The Office goals are to teach job-specific, communication, leadership and practical skills for all employees; teach latest scientific and technical concepts to support research to operations; emulate the NWS working field environment in an educational setting; and provide students the ability to work and experiment with concepts or equipment off-line as part of learning.

  • COMET has published Aviation Focal Point: A Day in the Life. Through interactive scenarios, learners will connect Categorical Amendment Criteria to the monitoring elements of AvnFPS software. Throughout the lesson they will make decisions about how best to communicate with partners regarding decision support issues, and will practice mentoring team members who encounter aviation-related performance issues.   • COMET has published National Water Model Services: Training Videos. These videos, and accompanying 1-page fact sheets, cover five services as well as the quantities "bankfull" and "annual exceedance probability" as used by the model. Experts from NOAA's National Water Center and from WFOs help the learner see how these services can be used in operational forecasting and decision support services.
