The Sexual & Gender Minority Research Office (SGMRO) annually supports an administrative supplement program to allow the addition of sexual and gender minority (SGM) populations or related research questions to existing parent grants provided that the proposed research is within the scope of the parent grant. An administrative supplement is a non-competing award that provides additional funding to a currently funded parent grant to meet increased costs that are within the scope of the approved project, but that were unforeseen when the new or competing renewal application was awarded.

The SGM Administrative Supplements program began in 2015. To date, the program has provided nearly $6.2 million in funding to 64 unique supplements that span a broad range of key topics in SGM health research.

FY 2021 Application Cycle

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is currently accepting applications for the FY 2021 SGM Administrative Supplements program. Applications are due January 25, 2021 by 5:00 PM local time of applicant organization.

Purpose: Notice of Special Interest (NOSI) regarding Administrative Supplements for Research on Sexual and Gender Minority (SGM) Populations (NOT-OD-20-032) announces the availability of administrative supplements to provide funding for the expansion of existing research projects to incorporate SGM populations, which include, but are not limited to, those populations described in NOT-OD-19-139. Basic, social, behavioral, clinical, translational, and health services research relevant to the missions of the sponsoring NIH Institutes or Centers (ICs) may be proposed in response to this solicitation.

Potential applicants are also encouraged to review the NIH FY 2021–2025 Strategic Plan to Advance Research on the Health and Well-being of Sexual and Gender Minorities and the FY 2018 Portfolio Analysis of NIH-funded SGM research to identify potential research gaps that may be relevant to this NOSI.

More information about the program, application process, and related contact information can be found within the NOSI (NOT-OD-20-032).
