In August 2018, President Donald J. Trump and Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta established the U.S.-Kenya Trade and Investment Working Group to explore ways to deepen the trade and investment ties between the two countries. This work includes supporting comprehensive trade policies and laying the groundwork for a stronger future trade relationship.
On February 6, 2020, President Trump and President Kenyatta agreed to pursue negotiations on a trade agreement between the United States and Kenya. On March 17, 2020, at the direction of the President, United States Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer notified Congress of the Trump Administration’s intent to negotiate a trade agreement with Kenya. On March 23, USTR requested public comment on the Administration’s negotiating objectives for the U.S.-Kenya trade agreement.
