Search Information
This page allows users to search for journal articles using specific criteria. Any type of article
may be returned (Research, Letters, About the Cover, etc.), and from any published issue,
but results are limited to 200 matches.
The search is powered by PubMed Central (PMC), but results will link directly to the Emerging Infectious
Diseases website. If a search has more than 200 results, then the first 200 articles based on
relevance are returned. All searches must have at least one search criteria specified, and can have
multiple keywords and authors. When specifying date ranges, a start and end date must be specified.
Search results are returned in a table. Each column is sortable, and the number of items shown on
each page can be customized. The results table also has its own search box, which can be used to
further filter results.
Keyword Search
Articles in the journal are tagged with keywords. To search for keywords, type at least two
characters in the textbox. The top 30 results will be returned in a list, in descending order
from most used to least used. To add a keyword to your search, select it from the list. Keywords can
only be selected from the drop down one at a time, but your search can include multiple keywords. To
include additional keywords, repeat the process of finding keywords by using the text box.
To remove a keyword from your search, click the "x" icon next to the keyword.
Keywords may be attached to different articles with slightly different spellings or abbreviations. To
retrieve all of the articles relevant to a keyword, it may be necessary to select all the variations
of the spelling, and use the "OR" logic for the keyword search.
Keyword Logic
The radio buttons specify the logic for searching multiple keywords. If "AND" is selected,
the search will return articles that include ALL of the selected keywords. For example, you can
search for articles about "Salmonella" AND "Poultry". If "OR" is selected, the search will return
articles that contain ANY of the selected keywords. For example, you can search for articles about
"Salmonella" OR "Poultry".
Author Search
To search for journal authors, type at least two letters in the textbox. The top 30 results
will be returned in a list, in descending order from most articles to least articles. Any author
attached to an article in the journal will be returned. To add an author to your search, select
them from the list.
To remove an author from your search, click the "delete" icon next to the author. Multiple authors
can be included in a search. To add an additional author to the search, repeat the process of using
the search text box. The author search does not check references for an author's name.
Authors may be attached to different articles with slightly different names. For example, an author
may be listed as "John Smith" on one article and "John Q. Smith" on another article. To retrieve all
of the articles an author has written, it may be necessary to select all the variations of their name,
and use the "OR" logic for the author search. For the example above, I could retrieve articles for
"John Smith" OR "John Q. Smith".
Author Logic
The radio buttons specify the logic for searching multiple authors. If "AND" is selected,
the search will return articles written by ALL of the selected authors. For example, you can search
for articles by "John Smith" AND "Jane Doe". If "OR" is selected, the search will return articles
written by ANY of the selected authors. For example, you can search for articles by "John Smith" OR
"Jane Doe".
Date Range
The search can specify a date range based on publication date. Results will have a publication date
within the specified range. Both a "From" and "To" date must be specified for the search to work
correctly. Dates can be entered manually in "MM/DD/YYYY" format, or use the date picker that appears
when clicking the text box. Not all the available years appear in the year drop down. To make older years
appear in the drop down, select the oldest year. Then click the year drop down again and previous
years will be available.
Results
Up to 200 search results will be returned matching the search criteria. The resulting table is sortable
and searchable. Links are provided to the volume, issue, and article itself. Links open in a new tab.
Links to the articles are in the column "Article No." The links are created using information received
from PMC. Sometimes the information received from PMC will be incomplete, in which case the word "Issue"
will be in place of the article number. The links titled "Issue" will navigate to the table of contents
for the correct issue, and the article may be located from there. Links may also occasionally be
incorrect. We are working to fix these mistakes so that the search results are more reliable.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why don't the search results have the keyword I entered?
This is usually caused when the keyword wasn't selected from the drop down list of the keyword
search. A keyword is only included in the search when it appears in a list below the keyword
text box next to a "delete" icon. If you still see the text you entered in the keyword text box,
then you didn't add the keyword to your search. See the "Quick Start Guide" at the top of the page
for more details.
Why aren't the results written by the author I entered?
This is usually caused when the author wasn't selected from the drop down list of the author
search. An author is only included in the search when he or she appears in a list below the author
text box next to a "delete" icon. If you still see the text you entered in the author text box,
then you didn't add the author to your search. See the "Quick Start Guide" at the top of the page
for more details.
Why do some of my search results not link directly to the article, and instead link to the issue?
This issue is caused by how some of the older journal volumes were entered into PubMed Central. It is an issue we
hope to have fixed in the future. For now, you can find the article in the table of contents by clicking
on the issue.
