MDL Storm Surge Team

Goal

Save lives by producing sufficent guidance for National Weather Service's (NWS) Storm Surge and Coastal Flood Watches and Warnings.

Vision

Provide NWS forecasters and operational partners with (a) accurate and timely Tropical and Extra-Tropical storm surge guidance for all NWS coastal areas of responsibility and (b) decision support tools for use at incident response centers.

Mission

To continually improve the quality of operational storm surge guidance and decision support tools used by NWS's National Hurricane Center (NHC), Ocean Prediction Center (OPC), regional headquarters, coastal Weather Forecast Offices (WFOs) and River Forecast Centers (RFCs), along with NWS operational partners such as local Emergency Managers (EMs), Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the media so they in turn can protect against loss of life and property.

To support the National Hurricane Program (NHP), a multi-agency effort between the Federal Emergency Management Agencency (FEMA), the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers, the U.S. Department of Transportation, and the U.S. Geological Survey to develop and enhance the nation's evacuation routes.

To support NWS partners such as the Nuclear Regulatory Comission (NRC) in nuclear power plant regulations, and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in developing building standards.
