Getting Involved

Facing Forward: Making a Difference in Cancer (August 2018 Update)

Designed for survivors, family members, and their friends, this booklet provides an overview of the potential benefits of involvement in activities that “give back” to the community, as well as the ways in which one can become involved in those activities.

NCI Office of Advocacy Relations (OAR)

OAR is NCI’s principal conduit for engaging the cancer advocacy community. Learn about opportunities for advocates to participate in research and other NCI-sponsored activities.

NCI Council of Research Advocates (NCRA)

NCRA is NCI’s only federal advisory committee comprised solely of advocate leaders at NCI. The group makes recommendations to NCI’s director, from the perspective and viewpoint of a cancer research advocate on a wide variety of issues, programs, and research priorities.

NCCN Guidelines® for Survivorship

The National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NNCN) Guidelines for survivorship focus on eight common impacts of cancer diagnosis and treatment, and include a sample assessment tool. NCCN is an alliance of 23 cancer centers around the country.

Championing Survivorship Science and Care Since 1996

This 2016 booklet, marking the 20th anniversary of the Office of Cancer Survivorship, provides an overview of the creation of the office and its ongoing work to improve the lives of cancer survivors and their loved ones.

The Biennial Cancer Survivorship Research Conference, which took place every two years from 2002 through 2016, brought together researchers, clinicians, cancer survivors, advocates, policy-makers, and public health experts to share and learn about the most up-to-date cancer survivorship research.

This free series, which took place annually from 2003 until 2012, offered cancer survivors, their families, friends, and health care professionals practical information to help them cope with concerns and issues that arise after treatment ends. The series was a collaboration among the National Cancer Institute, LIVESTRONG, CancerCare, the American Cancer Society, the Intercultural Cancer Council, Living Beyond Breast Cancer, and the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship.
