Ted Nickel, NAIC President and Wisconsin Insurance Commissioner, testified before Congress today in opposition to the covered agreement and encouraged Congress to reopen negotiations.
The NAIC submitted testimony to the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Regulatory Reform, Commercial and Antitrust Law. The testimony is for consideration by the committee as it holds a hearing focused on the Competitive Health Insurance Reform Act of 2017.
Julie Mix McPeak, NAIC President-Elect and Tennessee Insurance Commissioner, testified on behalf of her state on health reform issues before the U.S. Senate. Her remarks focused on the need for stability in health insurance markets.
State insurance regulators wrote to congressional committee leadership this week to promote state-based solutions as they consider legislation that impacts health insurance. "Insurance markets are local, and the different experiences around the country reinforce the need for increased state flexibility and deference."
The NAIC recently named 35 consumer liaison representatives for 2017. The 22 funded and 13 unfunded consumer representatives began their terms Jan. 1. Eighteen of the funded consumer representatives participated in the program in 2017.
