Country-Specific Information:

  • Indonesia continues to see an upward trajectory of new COVID-19 cases. The Indonesian government has instituted “new normal” policies including mandatory compliance of mask use and social distancing. While the government has lifted most restrictions regarding transit and daily activity, measures remain in place limiting large-scale gatherings and non-essential travel. Schools and large public gathering areas also remain closed, however public transit and access to essential services including grocery stores is widely available.

Entry and Exit Requirements:

  • Are U.S. citizens permitted to enter? Yes, but only with an existing valid visa or residence permit
  • The Indonesian government has restricted foreign visitors from transiting and traveling to Indonesian Territory unless they are in possession of an existing valid visa or residence permit. Visa-free and visa-on-arrival entry for all foreign travelers, including U.S. citizens, remains suspended. The government has not indicated a timeline for when international visitors will be able to enter the country.   • Is a negative COVID-19 test (PCR and/or serology) required for entry? Yes
  • Are health screening procedures in place at airports and other ports of entry? Yes
  • Holders of Visa on Arrival (B213) granted an Emergency Stay Permit can extend their permits for an additional 30 days unless the Indonesian government declares the COVID-19 pandemic over. The permit extension period for holders of VOA began on July 13 and the deadline is August 20, 2020.

Movement Restrictions:

  • Is a curfew in place? No
  • Are there restrictions on intercity or interstate travel? Yes [Note: COVID-19 negative results are required for domestic flights. Consult your airline for more information.]

Quarantine Information:

  • Are U.S. citizens required to quarantine? Yes
  • All foreign visitors arriving in Indonesia are required to:
    • Hold a health certificate issued by health authorities from their home countries
    • Undertake a mandatory 14-day quarantine at designated facilities conducted by the Indonesian government or self-quarantine under supervision of the Indonesian health authority
    • If you cannot obtain a COVID test prior to traveling to Indonesia, the government will test you upon arrival at the airport. You must agree to be quarantined if you test positive.

COVID-19 Testing:

  • Both the PCR swab tests and rapid tests for COVID-19 are available at various hospitals and clinics throughout Indonesia. Prices vary depending on location but generally the PCR swab tests range from 1.500.000 to 2.750.00 IDR ($100 -$180) while the rapid test ranges from 500.000 IDR – 1.000.000 ($30 – $70). The accuracy and reliability of the available testing in Indonesia is inconsistent and rapid tests are not considered reliable.

Transportation Options:

  • Are commercial flights operating? Yes
    • International flights continue to operate from Jakarta including to transit points where U.S. citizens can return to the United States. Individuals are encouraged to utilize airline transit only in emergency or critical circumstances. Passengers must certify compliance with social distancing measures and secure a negative COVID rapid test, which is valid for 14 days, before boarding any domestic flight.
  • Is public transportation operating? Yes
    • Individuals utilizing public transmit must comply with large-scale social distancing policies which includes the mandatory use of face masks and maintaining appropriate physical separation.

Fines for Non-Compliance: (if applicable)

  • Individuals who do not comply with existing social distancing policies are subject to fines and other penalties.

Consular Operations:

  • The US Embassy Jakarta and the Consular Agency in Bali remain open for emergency American citizen services including passport renewals, emergency passports, and Consular Reports of Birth Abroad. Routine services, including notary services, remain suspended.
  • The US Embassy Jakarta has suspended all non-immigrant visa services until further notice. The Embassy has initiated limited processing for immigrant visas that meet certain criteria.
