Questions regarding assistance in order to return home
The Foreign Interests Section of the Embassy of Switzerland is receiving numerous enquiries from U.S. citizens, who are currently in Iran or from their concerned relatives and friends asking for assistance in order to return home.
We fully understand your situation, your difficulties and are following the situation closely. We are in touch with the relevant US, Swiss and local authorities on this matter.
The U.S. government does not have diplomatic or consular relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran and is unable to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens in Iran.
Based on the mandate of the Embassy of Switzerland and the current instructions given by the U.S. authorities the following applies:
The Department of State’s Travel Advisory for Iran is currently at Level 4- Do Not Travel to Iran due to the risk of kidnapping and the arbitrary arrest and detention of U.S. citizens. Those present in Iran should exercise increased caution due to an outbreak of COVID-19.
How will the U.S. assist its citizens wishing to leave Iran?
The U.S. government has been consistent in recommending its citizens not to travel to Iran. The United States urges those citizens currently in Iran to seriously consider departing by commercial means. While the U.S. government has successfully evacuated hundreds of its citizens in recent weeks, such repatriation flights do not reflect our standard practice and should not be relied on as an option for stranded U.S. citizens.
Please consult Tehran Airport website to see available commercial flights: Tehran Airport - Departures. We encourage you to contact the airline directly in order to make travel arrangements. Please note, that the Proclamation on the Suspension of Entry as Immigrants and Nonimmigrants of Certain Additional Persons Who Pose a Risk of Transmitting Coronavirus issued by the White House does not apply to American Citizens or green card holders (US resident). If the American citizen has family members traveling on a US visa, the traveler with a visa is subject to the proclamation if they have been in Iran or China in the last 14 days.
Anyone coming from an affected area may be subject to a quarantine on arrival, at the discretion of local authorities.
Preventing the spread of Coronavirus:
- Avoid contact with sick people.
- Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available.
- Follow local authority instructions.
- Since the situation may change rapidly, please closely monitor Travel.state.gov and CDC.gov for important information.
Sincerely,
Embassy of Switzerland
