    Thanks again to everybody who was able to make it to my town hall event earlier this afternoon in Ocean City. I thought the discussion about our 2nd Amendment rights and how we should deal with violence in our society is complex but that doesn't mean we should shy away from it. It is far more important that we deal with this issue the right way as opposed to the quick way.

    Feel free to share any thoughts you might have on the matter -- and keep an eye out for future town hall events.

    I just voted to freeze pay for federal employees (including myself). It would stop the automatic pay increase that President Obama had in place. At a time when our national debt is $16 trillion dollars, it is not responsible to be increasing the salaries of federal employees.

    I have been getting a lot of feedback about issues related to Second Amendment rights and gun safety issues so I will be hosting a town hall event this Saturday, Feb. 16th to discuss the matter with people of the 1st District. It will begin at noon at the Holiday Inn, Oceanfront in Ocean City. Maryland State Delegates Mike McDermott and Charles Otto will also be joining to provide their expertise....

    My initial thoughts on the State of the Union. Like so many of President Obama’s other lofty speeches, his words do not match his actions. Four straight trillion dollar deficits under the President’s watch clearly show we have a spending problem. Unfortunately, instead of focusing on getting Americans working again and reducing our deficit, President Obama focused on issues like gun control and ...climate change.

    House Republicans have recognized the urgent need to tackle the economic challenges we face. America’s spending is out of control. During the President’s speech tonight, America spent $450 million dollars, much of which was borrowed from places like China. This has to end. We have a moral obligation to our children and grandchildren to make sure the future we pass on to them is as free and prosperous as the one our parents passed on to us.    See More

    Tonight President Obama will be giving his State of the Union address. I hope he focuses on bipartisan solutions to create jobs and deal with our spending problem.

    I introduced a bill this week that would establish a park in Eastern Maryland to honor Harriet Tubman. She's a native Marylander whose impact on justice and civil rights in our country is noteworthy.

    I was watching the Super Bowl and cheering for a Baltimore Ravens win, but I also saw a couple commercials that I enjoyed. I especially liked this one from Dodge because it sends a good message about the hardworking farm families across this country especially those in Maryland. http://bit.ly/YAeKnh

    The day is finally here! What's everybody doing to root on the Baltimore Ravens? I'll be watching from home with my family. It will be bittersweet watching Ray Lewis's last game, and I'm confident they'll be able to pull it off.

    I really appreciate all the kind wishes and support from people for my strong support of "The No Budget, No Pay Act." I have been getting questions from people asking why I signed the bill. Well, I was chosen by Office of Speaker Boehner to be a "Speaker Pro Tempore" which means I fill in as Speaker of the House when he is not there. I get to preside over the House of Representatives and sign bills. It's pretty cool and a great honor!

    This afternoon, the Senate will vote on "The No Budget No Pay Act" which I strongly supported last week. It withholds the pay for Members of Congress until they pass a budget.

    I'm working with Senator David Vitter from Louisiana on worker choice legislation that would level the playing field for construction workers on federal projects.

    This legislation would end the defacto discrimination that resulted from Pr...esident Obama's executive order that favors union workers over non union workers.

    The legislation would enhance the competitiveness of federal government contracts, bring down the cost, and improve project completion time.

    My bill is pro-growth, pro-taxpayer, and pro-worker. Like if you agree!

    Today, I made a friendly wager with House Republican Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy from California that the Baltimore Ravens would beat the San Francisco 49ers in the Super Bowl. "When" the Ravens win, he'll be sending over Dewar's taffy--a favorite from Bakersfield, CA. If the 49ers happen to win, I'll send over some of Maryland's finest crab cakes. I can't wait for the taffy!!
