  3. Yesterday I was sworn in as a member of the 113th Congress. It’s a great honor! Our DC staff joined me for the ceremony.

  4. Tonight I voted for a bipartisan compromise to prevent tax hikes on 98 percent of Americans and to extend unemployment benefits for those who are still struggling. The bill is far from perfect, but constituents from across the district and the country asked Congress to work together to find solutions to avoid across-the-board cuts and tax increases on everyone. I look forward to starting the 113th Congress with renewed optimism and improved working relations with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle.
  5. It’s almost the new year. I am terribly disappointed by our inability to pass extensions of middle class tax cuts, unemployment insurance, and Medicare reimbursements. We need to end partisan standoffs and work together to find solutions that strengthen our economy and establish certainty for families and businesses.
  6. Thank you to Senators Wyden and Murkowski for promoting more transparency in campaign finance. As a cosponsor of the DISCLOSE Act, I hope we can get it passed soon.
  7. I’m deeply disappointed that the House leadership left town without a real solution to the so-called “fiscal cliff.” We should be coming together to make sure taxes don’t go up on most Americans, find savings, and stop the impending across-the-board cuts that will be devastating to our economy and safety net. I stand ready and willing to work with all of my colleagues.
  8. Regardless of where we stand on the so-called “fiscal cliff”, we all must recognize that now isn't the time for party politics — it is time to be a party to the discussion that will determine our way forward. See my op-ed in The Hill for some thoughts on how to reach a workable compromise.
  9. My thoughts are with the family of Senator Daniel K. Inouye and the people of Hawaii today. A war hero and outspoken voice for his constituents, Senator Inouye was a true leader and will be missed.
