Press Release

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Congressman Dan Bishop (NC-09) announced a grant for the Town of Pembroke for a new wastewater treatment facility from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration (EDA). Rep. Bishop urged the Department of Commerce for months to issue the grant, which is vital to Pembroke’s recovery from years of natural disasters.

“Flooding has devastated the Town of Pembroke, and investment in a new wastewater facility is critical to the area’s resilience and recovery. This community is ripe for economic investment, which is why I advocated for this grant that will bring 100 new jobs and unleash economic potential. I thank the Economic Development Administration and Secretary Wilbur Ross for supporting Pembroke’s bright future,” said Bishop.

This greatly needed federal aid will ensure the economic and institutional viability of our community while also protecting industry from the impacts of future Hurricane events,” said Charles Gregory Cummings, Mayor of the Town of Pembroke. “I can't overstate how important this grant is to our Town and the region and I want to thank the Town of Pembroke's Council and staff as well as Skip Green & Associates and MESCO Engineering for their hard work on the grant proposal."

"I would also like to thank Senator Richard Burr, Senator Thom Tillis and Congressman Dan Bishop for their support of this project and to thank the U.S. Economic Development Agency for choosing the Town of Pembroke as a recipient of this grant," concludes Cummings.

“Hurricane Florence severely impacted Pembroke and Robeson County in 2018,” said Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross. “This project will enhance flood resiliency and boost Pembroke’s capacity to meet current and future economic development and business needs in an Opportunity Zone, further enabling the local economy to transform and diversify.”

The Economic Development Administration granted $6,377,992 toward Pembroke to improve Wastewater Treatment Plant after the disastrous impacts of Hurricane Florence in 2018. This award is projected to create 100 private sector jobs while also ensuring the community has a vital tool for economic success.
