Telework offers the flexibility to work from anywhere, anytime. Working remotely lets us get the job done in unforeseen circumstances and unconventional places. Know the telework basics and be ready to help your agency deliver your mission wherever you log in.

Stay Prepared

Many federal employees telework regularly, but there's also the occasional need to emergency telework or unscheduled telework. Bring your laptop home every day. Use a headset? Take that, too. Have the files you need on hand or available virtually, within security and IT guidelines.

Every individual is responsible for protecting and managing records and other sensitive information stored on telework devices and transmitted across external networks. Don’t forward work emails or documents to your personal email account or bring home files that contain secure or sensitive information. Use encryption as required.

Stay Connected

Make sure you have secure network access--a high-speed, broadband internet connection from your Internet Service Provider (ISP). If you’re in a pinch and your agency approves, you can use your mobile device to create an internet hotspot.

Keep business moving and stay connected to your customers and work teams with chat, email, and virtual meetings. Technology lets us screen share and video conference with colleagues across the world.

Stay Protected

Use your government-issued computer and a secure connection to access your agency’s network. Ensure that your network is protected from threats [PDF - 36 KB] and purchase a router or switch with a built-in firewall.

Secure your gear and don’t leave devices unattended, especially when working in public places. Keep passwords in a safe location, not on or around your equipment. Get more detailed guidance on remote access and device security in this guide from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
