Historic Pumphouse

The restored 1870 Indianapolis Water Comapny pumping station provided the first public water service for Indianapolis and is included on the National Register of Historic Places.  The Historic Pumphouse is currently home to the Park's administrative offices.  To the west and overlooking the White River, is a pavilion containing a memorial to Michael A. Carroll, Frank McKinney, Jr., Robert Welch, and John Weliever.  These four civic leaders were killed during a 1992 Park business trip when the airplane carrying them crashed.

Historic Old Washington Street Pedestrian Bridge | Art Sculptures in the Park

Originally built in 1833 as a part of the National Road (Historic U.S. 40), this bridge is now a pedestrian crosswalk linking the Park's western attractions like the Indianapolis Zoo & White River Gardens and White River Promenade to the eastern attractions on the other side of the White River. Also the bridge is home to our biennial Art Sculptures in the Park experience (started in 1999) to showcase Indiana (and regional) artists. This rolling two-year program makes art accessible and free to all Park visitors.  The sculptures are for sale by the artists

Historic Military Park

Toss a Frisbee, walk your dog, or simply settle into the grass in our 14-acre greenspace, which borders the IUPUI campus. Named after its shape as a military badge, Historic Military Park was a Civil War encampment and home to Indiana’s first state fair. It also holds distinction as one of three pieces of property the state is forbidden to sell (Monument Circle and the part of the Statehouse known as “the State House Square” are the other two). Today, it’s home to Indianapolis' largest festivals and events.

White River Promenade

You’ll feel as though you’ve found a secret passage as you wander along our White River Ppromenade, a half-mile walkway lined with flowering trees and evergreens that offers unique views of the White River and the Indianapolis skyline. Look for the hand-carved “rose window," renderings of famous buildings, and other constructions from Indiana limestone. The embedded artwork is carved into the limestone blocks along the trail.
