American energy infrastructure faces challenges today that are more urgent and, in some cases, unlike those it faced in the past. New infrastructure must be resilient enough to withstand increasingly extreme weather events, physical failure, and intricate cyberattacks. At the same time, the energy system as a whole must adapt to better incorporate renewables and engage customers who behave much differently today than in previous decades.
At PNNL, scientists and engineers are dedicated to improving the resiliency of the U.S. energy system. A particular focus is the electric grid. From advanced grid modeling to expanded energy storage and renewable integration, our researchers are taking steps to achieve a more secure, robust, and vibrant grid infrastructure. We not only perform innovative R&D to advance energy production and secure transmission but also to find more efficient ways to use energy resources in transportation, buildings, and industry, and in advancing renewable energy technologies.
In an increasingly complex landscape, we envision and create—in collaboration with dozens of partners—technologies that make the U.S. energy system more efficient, reliable, and resilient.
