TUS-CPS Questionnaires and Data Files

Questionnaires

The questionnaires for the 2001-2002, 2003, 2006-2007, 2010-2011, 2014-2015, and 2018-2019 Tobacco Use Supplement to the Current Population Survey (TUS-CPS) are available for download below in two formats. In addition, for the May 2010-2011 special Longitudinal Cohort TUS-CPS, please see below - "2010-11 TUS-CPS" for the May 2010 baseline questionnaire and "May 2011 Follow-up" for the May 2011 follow-up questionnaire.

Data Files

SAS programs for creating a permanent SAS dataset from the .dat and ASCII text files are available for the harmonized and single wave public use files, respectively. For harmonized data files, please refer to the technical documentation Section V. For single wave public use files, please refer to the data table below. Each program reads all variables from the core and the supplement and creates a SAS dataset containing all the variables.

Replicate Weights

The Census CPS FTP site contains TUS-CPS replicate weight files for 2010-2019, along with CPS files and other supplement files. The CPS questionnaire is available on the CPS Questionnaire page.

Harmonized Dataset 1992-2015

Interested in tracking trends over time? How about enlarging your analytic sample size? Data from all currently available waves (1992-2015) were recently harmonized into a single dataset. Harmonized topics include cigarette use, workplace and home smoking restrictions, attitudes toward smokefree policies, advice to quit by physician/dentist, health perceptions/beliefs, and other tobacco product use.

***We refer to those who responded to both the February 2002 TUS and the February 2003 Tobacco Use Special Cessation Supplement as the overlap sample. The responses to the overlap sample can be analyzed as one-year longitudinal study with a representative sample of the U.S. and hence furnishes a unique opportunity for data analysis. This report summarizes weighting methodology and overlap sample characteristics.

Translated Questionnaires

Researchers can use the TUS-CPS translations with populations of interest to obtain information on current use of cigarettes, history of use, and cessation attempts. The translated questionnaires also include a shorter section on other tobacco use (cigars, pipes, chewing tobacco, and snuff). The questionnaires are designed for telephone administration but can be adapted to other modes, such as in-person interviewing.

Most translated questionnaires are available as a computer-assisted interview (CAI) instrument and as a paper-and-pencil interview (PAPI) instrument. Learn more about TUS-CPS translations into other languages.
