Peggy Browne was sworn in as the USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) Deputy Administrator for Field Operations (DAFO) on Aug. 20, 2018.

As Deputy Administrator, Browne is responsible for the supervision and oversight of FSA’s network of over 2,100 state and county offices. She and her staff serve as primary liaisons between field and headquarters offices on agency-wide issues. The DAFO staff works to provide support and resources to over 18,000 FSA field team members to deliver efficient, effective service to the hardworking farmers, ranchers and producers across the United States and Territories.

Browne previously served as the state executive director of Oregon FSA since her appointment by the Trump Administration in November 2017. In this role, she provided leadership overseeing FSA farm programs and loans in the state.

Browne was born and raised in Baker County, Oregon, where her family raised beef cattle and later transitioned into a dairy farm. She graduated from Oregon State University with a degree in rangeland ecology and management, along with a minor in crops and soil sciences. She earned a master’s degree in rangeland ecology from Colorado State University.

Browne believes in strengthening American agriculture through good stewardship of public and private lands and empowering American farmers to be solution orientated. She has worked for over 14 years as an agriculture and environmental policy consultant. As a consultant, assisted clients with USDA Farm Bill programs and other conservation-based and collaborative projects, including the development of grazing and agriculture water management plans and conservation easements. Browne helped facilitate rural prosperity and economic development in these program areas.

She echoes Secretary Perdue’s direction of facts-based and data-driven choices from State leadership. By providing a platform for State leadership to interact with Agency executives, Browne strengthens the Department’s vision to be the most customer-focused department in the federal government. She seeks to enhance operations at each Agency level in order to best serve American farmers and ranchers, the dedicated employee, and all others who rely on the efficiencies of the Department. 

Peggy and her husband, Bill, co-own and manage a ranch in eastern Oregon and have two sons, Heith and Cade.
