U.S. Support Strengthens Response to Trafficking in Persons in the Kyrgyz Republic
The U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) is working to strengthen the criminal justice response to trafficking in persons by contributing $100,000 to a United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) project that will improve investigations and prosecutions of human trafficking in the Kyrgyz Republic.
The U.S. contribution to this UNODC project, made official in April, will use targeted interventions to rapidly increase the number of investigations and prosecutions of human trafficking cases in the Kyrgyz Republic. UNODC will work with the Kyrgyz Bar Association, the Ministry of Interior, and the General Prosecutor’s Office as they improve government capacity to fight human trafficking.
UNODC has extensive project management experience in the criminal justice sector and in combatting trafficking in persons. Past projects trained law enforcement officials, prosecutors, judges, and lawyers. The UNODC has well established working relations with Kyrgyz law enforcement and judicial bodies, which will be essential for effective implementation of the project.
This project is funded by INL through appropriations made by Congress to the U.S. Department of State that support efforts in the fight against human trafficking in the Kyrgyz Republic and worldwide.
